NI Homelessness Conference

  Thursday 10 October 2024

Riddel Hall, 185 Stranmillis Road, Belfast, BT9 5EE This Conference is now FULLY BOOKED

With unprecedented need for homelessness services, increased use of private “non-standard” accommodation and recognition that we need a different approach, this one-day conference will focus on unlocking solutions to homelessness through collaboration.

Delegates will be provided with invaluable insights into the strategic operating environment and the challenges faced by funders, service providers and people living in supported accommodation. During the day, we will have excellent contributions from leaders and innovators from across these islands – UK and Ireland, who will share their experiences and learning on how they overcame barriers to support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Our conference is designed to ensure maximum participation, including people with lived experience, and will provide space and time for practitioners to contribute through workshops, discussions, Q & A speaker panels and delegate polls.

Tickets cost £95 (ex. vat) for members of Homeless Connect and £145 (ex. vat) for non-members.

This Conference is now FULLY BOOKED. Any further bookings will be added to a waiting list and places will be offered in the event of any cancellations.

Workshops

Housing and homelessness in the Programme for Government

This workshop led by our Head of Policy and Programmes Mark Baillie will consider the draft Programme for Government put out for consultation by the Northern Ireland Executive.

It will include a briefing on the document from Department for Communities officials with a particular emphasis on how housing and homelessness is considered. Depaul’s Dermot Murphy and Simon Community CEO Jim Dennison will provide their thoughts on what is (and is not) included.

The seminar will also give participants an opportunity to inform Homeless Connect’s response to the consultation on the draft Programme for Government.

Psychologically Informed Environments

In this interactive workshop facilitated by Dr Ray Middleton, we will be looking at the system-wide environment through the lens Dr Middleton’s Ladder4Life framework.

Using the PIEs self-assessment process and focusing on the pillar ‘spaces of opportunity’ participants will collectively assess how psychologically informed the wider homelessness sector in Northern Ireland is looking at relationships, service pathways and system coherence.

Using the Ladder4Life approach we will then identify helping and hindering factors, which will collectively identify help to create key actions on what would help individual organisations and the sector as a whole progress to be more psychologically informed.

Supporting people using substances

This workshop- which will be led by Iain Cameron (Buff) from Extern- will provide insights into contemporary trends in substance use in NI as well as practical advice on how services can best support people who use substances.

It will consider barriers to provision of effective support for people who use substances as well as considering measures which public, statutory and voluntary sector organisations could take to overcome these barriers.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of one of NI’s leading experts in this field.

Housing Solutions- Socialudo: A Serious Game

In this workshop, Professor Vikki McCall, Professor Alasdair Rutherford and Barbara Haig will be leading an interactive workshop focused on housing solutions for people experiencing homelessness.

The workshop will involve an exciting new Serious Game methodology being applied all across the UK helping people plan and future proof housing provision. It will see participants take part in a game of ‘socialudo‘ where they will be divided in to four groups: policy makers, budget holders, people with lived experience and support teams.

Participants will look to consider different housing solutions for people in ‘Hopetown’ with lived experience of homelessness from a range of perspectives.

Engaging in Effective Co-production

In this workshop, led by Sian Erickson, we will be exploring the topic of co-production, looking at how we can best facilitate and promote effective and meaningful coproduction in homelessness services.

The session looks to unpick what ‘good’ coproduction means and looks like in practice – giving participants practical tips to take away and implement in their own services/ projects.

Reflecting on her own experiences working on a small project to provide peer support to families who have been involved with statutory services; Sian will discuss how using a coproduced approach helped to reduce parental stress and improve outcomes for children and families.
