What’s planned?

The event aims to bring focus to the importance of homelessness prevention and give participants the opportunity to hear and learn from others working to prevent homelessness in creative and innovative ways. In addition to a number of speakers and a choice of two seminars, participants will also have the opportunity to network and converse with others working to prevent homelessness.

Kicking off the day, you will hear a short presentation welcome presentation from the Northern Ireland Frontline Network before hearing from the Declan Morris and Paul Fleming from the Homelessness Prevention forum who will be discussing the work the forum does in promoting and prioritising homelessness prevention across Northern Ireland.

Following on from the opening plenary, you will have the option to participate in one of two featured seminars (details below) where you will hear from experts working in the field of homelessness prevention.

Closing the day, you will have the opportunity to ask you own questions to any of the guest speakers in a open question and answer session before having the opportunity to network with others in attendance.

Seminar 1: Using Reflection to Develop Practice and Maintain Wellbeing

This seminar on reflective practice will be facilitated by Tina O’Reilly Programme Manager for the Practice Development Unit at Extern and her two colleagues Theresa Ormandy and Ashley Galloway. Theresa is the manager of the Criminal Justice Floating Support Service at Extern and Ashley is a social worker in the service.

Tina qualified as a social worker in 2006 and has been working in Extern since then.  Tina’s practice experience was mainly with adults in Extern’s Criminal Justice Floating Support Service.  Tina qualified as a practice teacher for social work students in 2017 and has since worked in Extern’s Practice Development Team, which she now manages.  Her current role involves supporting learning and development for staff, students and volunteers.

Tina will introduce the concept of reflective practice and its role in supervising and supporting staff who are managing high levels of complexity and are therefore at risk of vicarious and secondary trauma.  Tina will give examples of some models/ tools that can be used for this purpose.

Ashley will present an overview of the complex needs of a female service user using the Collingwood model, from a practitioner point of view.  Theresa will then use Siobhan McClean’s ‘Weather Model’ to discuss the impact on staff care and wellbeing, from a manager/ supervisor’s perspective.  The presentation will then focus on actions taken resulting from this reflective process.

There will be time for wider group discussion at the end of the presentation.

Seminar 2: PIEs and Tenancy Sustainment

Robin worked as a psychiatric social worker for over 20 years, before getting into research and development. He developed the concept of a psychologically informed environment during his time as the lead on mental health and housing for the National Social Inclusion Programme.  Since then he has been the facilitator of the PIElink community of practice, and is currently working on an initiative over tenancy sustainment for all vulnerable groups.

In this seminar, Robin (appearing via video link) will be discussing the use of the PIEs approach in the field of Homelessness Prevention and tenancy sustainment, looking at how the principles of the PIEs approach can be adapted and used in housing related support outreach/floating support services.
