Homeless Connect – Trauma Informed Practice

This full day online course explores how psychological trauma can impact the developing brain, in turn affecting later adult behavioural patterns and the ability to regulate emotion. The course will give a deeper understanding of trauma and why Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is essential when working with people experiencing homelessness.

This course will provide learners with:

  • A greater understanding of what psychological trauma is and how to use trauma informed practice in a work setting
  • Confidence to work effectively with people affected by trauma.

By the end of this course learners will be able to:

  • Understand the role of early relationships and the impact of developmental trauma the
  • Know the six principles of trauma-informed practice
  • Recognise PTSD and Complex PTSD
  • Know how to support recovery using emotional regulation and stabilisation techniques within a trauma-informed and strengths-based framework
  • Know about vicarious trauma
  • Apply self-care strategies to look after yourself at work.

The course is aimed at:

Frontline workers: Case managers, outreach workers, shelter staff, and social workers who interact directly with clients experiencing homelessness.

Management and leadership: Program managers, supervisors, and policy developers to ensure organisational practices are trauma informed.

Healthcare and mental health providers: Nurses, therapists, and counsellors working with clients in shelters or community programmes.

This training is facilitated by BGPS
