Understanding and Management of Hoarding

This in person half-day course provides a structured step by step process to tackle all types of hoarding from first visit, to bringing the accommodation back to an acceptable level within a realistic timescale. The course also provides an insight into understanding and manage hoarding in homelessness and temporary accommodation settings.
This course will provide learners with:
- Hoarding types in detail, including links with OCD, research findings and psychological theory
- Understanding the difference between hoarding and extreme clutter
- Understanding hoarding disorder and hoarding as a result of other mental illness, brain injury or learning disability
- Treatment options, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- Understanding how to use consistent hoarding assessments and photographs to identify clutter-levels and the impact
- The benefits of multi-agency responses and identify key partners
- An overview of the legal issues including disability and mental health legislation, housing law and environmental health powers.
By the end of this course learners will be able to:
- Understand all aspects of hoarding and extreme clutter
- Understand the reasons why someone hoards and the best ways to support them, including positive language and rapport building
- Help people to set overall goals and agree actions/pledges
- Have skills and knowledge to take the lead in inter-agency working in the most serious cases, partnering with fire and rescue and legal options including environmental health and tenancy law.
The course is aimed at:
Frontline workers: Case managers, outreach workers, shelter staff, and social workers who interact directly with people experiencing homelessness.
Management and leadership: Program managers, supervisors, and policy developers to ensure organisational practices are knowledgeable about the subject.
Healthcare and mental health providers: Nurses, therapists, and counsellors working with clients in shelters or community programmes.
