Reach Portrush has been running since 2017, providing weekly meals and food support to individuals who find it difficult to leave their homes. The project delivers 56 meals weekly, operates a drop-in hub for lunch and entertainment for approximately 40 people, provides fortnightly family food bags, runs a weekly food bank, and supports school clubs and a youth club. Seasonal events such as Spring and Autumn suppers, as well as a summer outing, help combat social isolation.
Staffing and Engagement
Reach Portrush is supported by almost 30 volunteers and 7 trustees, with no paid employees. The project first learned about FareShare through a volunteer and has benefited from their support for five years. FareShare’s food and affordable pricing have allowed Reach to expand services and respond effectively to rising community demand.
Meeting Rising Demand
Demand for food support has nearly doubled in recent years. FareShare’s consistent and reliable food supply allows Reach Portrush to plan effectively and ensure no one goes hungry, including the rising number of asylum-seeking families who now access the service.
Challenges Before FareShare
Prior to partnering with FareShare, Reach relied on ad hoc local donations, making planning difficult and inconsistent. Securing sufficient food before delivery was a challenge, particularly for vulnerable families and individuals living alone. FareShare’s doorstep delivery and steady supply solved these issues, enabling year-round service.
Impact on Service Users
Service users report significant benefits: schools can run breakfast clubs for pupils who may otherwise go without, and families and older adults receive crucial support, particularly over the winter months. Reach Portrush also provides electric and oil top-ups and Christmas toys to help families and older adults manage seasonal pressures.
“Very easy to work with and reliable.”
Most Useful Products
Fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat provide the greatest financial relief, while ambient foods help meet emergency needs. FareShare’s support has been vital in allowing Reach Portrush to expand its services and maintain consistent food provision throughout the year.
