We recently had the pleasure of attending our new member, Life’s open morning to learn more about the work they’re doing from their base in East Belfast.
Who Are Life?
Life is a pregnancy support charity offering accredited, non-directive, professional services to anyone in the UK facing an unplanned or unexpected pregnancy. Alongside emotional and practical support, they also provide supported housing in partnership with local authorities, giving young women and mothers access to safe accommodation and a Life Skills programme.
Inside a Life House
Tenants usually stay in a Life House for up to two years before moving on to independent living. On arrival, they create their own strength-based support plans to help them set and work towards personal goals.
Most Life Houses, including the one we visited on Belmont Avenue, are shared accommodation with communal spaces. Staff described how tenants often share meals and spend time together, building strong peer support networks. The atmosphere in the unit was warm, positive, and grounded in community.
Support That Goes Further
Life’s Community Support Service extends help to pregnant women and mothers with young children who may not have a support network. Staff work closely with tenants to help them manage life goals and maintain their tenancy – skills that contribute directly to long-term stability.
Throughout the morning, there was a steady stream of partner organisations popping in to connect with the team. Senior colleagues from England were also present to speak about the charity’s wider direction and the support they offer.
Helping Create a Home
Alex, Julie and Gillian spoke with energy about their work across the six flats in the unit and the floating support they provide in the community. They shared anonymised stories of tenants who’ve built confidence, formed community connections and taken steps toward independence.
They also highlighted how Home Starter Packs from Homeless Connect play a key role when setting up apartments for new tenants. Items like bedding, kitchenware and basic household essentials help tenants feel welcomed and settled from day one.
Community Partners Making a Difference
The team spoke highly of the support they receive from local shops and churches, from practical donations to invitations to parent-and-toddler groups. These relationships help tenants build networks beyond the Life House, strengthening their confidence and sense of belonging.
A Busy, Dedicated Team
Like many of our members, Life’s frontline staff have demanding and meaningful roles, offering essential guidance and support to people who need it most. Their commitment to their tenants came through clearly at every point during the visit.
Thanks again to the team at Life for the warm welcome.
